The manufacturing process begins with thin webs of optically clear, flexible, polyester film available in a variety of thicknesses. Through a variety of coating, laminating, dyeing, and metallizing techniques, flexible film materials can be produced with an astonishing variety of appearances and functions. These films can be mounted onto glass using an adhesive coating on the film or laminated into glass or even applied to smooth, non-glass surfaces to serve special protective functions. The adhesives used can be permanent, semi-permanent, or removable, and the adhesives can also serve special functions of coloration or solar filtration, such as blocking the transmission of damaging ultraviolet light.
